Abstract

The world is moving at a very high pace in agricultural production with the development of smart agricultural technologies for poultry production. These technologies were however made available for use in poultry production for both developed and developing countries with Nigeria inclusive. This study investigated the factors influencing the adoption of artificial intelligence in poultry production in South Western, Nigeria. The study specifically described the socio-economic characteristics of poultry farmers in the study area; examined the level of awareness of artificial intelligence in the study area; identify the smart agricultural technology being used in poultry production and analyzed the factors influencing the adoption of artificial intelligence and the intensity of the adoption of artificial intelligence in the study area. A multistage sampling technique was used to select one hundred and eighty respondents in the study area. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, awareness index and double hurdle regression model. The result of the descriptive statistics showed that poultry farmers in South Western Nigeria were in their active age, and are literate. The result further showed that that poultry production is male dominated in the study area. The result of the awareness index revealed that awareness level was relatively high although it didn’t translate to full adoption of smart agricultural technology in the study area. The result of the first hurdle (decision to adopt) sowed that variables such as access to credit, farm income, farm size, perception positively significantly influence the adoption of artificial intelligence while cost of the technology negatively influence the decision to adopt artificial intelligence in the study area. In the second hurdle (intensity of adoption), variables such as years of education, access to credit, farm ownership and extension services positively and significantly influence the intensity of adoption of artificial intelligence in the study area. Based on the result of the study, it is therefore recommended that private agencies, government and stake holders needs to intensity the development of local smart agricultural technology at a lower cost which will facilitate the adoption of artificial intelligence in the study area.
